What are some of your best achievements to date?
Dec 2018 – National Paraswimming championships: 6 Golds
Feb/March 2019 – Kent County Championships: 6 Golds, 1 silver
March 2019 – Junior Para Nationals: 4 Golds, 1 Silver
April 2019 – BIPSM 2019: Top junior 50m Freestyle
August 2019 – Swim England National Summer Meet: 3 Golds
What is your most memorable sporting achievement to date?
The unexpected three Gold medals at the English Nationals, as in previous years I have made the finals but my highest position I achieved was 9th. I achieved this after a lot of struggles with training due to back pain for which I am awaiting surgery.
What are some of the challenges you have experienced within your chosen sport?
Attending training can be a challenge as it is dependant upon my parents being home from work in time. In the past year a complication of my condition has caused increased back pain and spasms, and my legs can go numb. A few times it has prevented me from continuing with my training; other times I have to get out and stretch before I am able to continue. The majority of Para swimming meets are not local and so involve a lot of mileage and accommodation, the cost of which are a struggle to meet especially when added to the costs of training, equipment and racing costumes.
The grant enabled me to compete in all the events I qualified for, whereas in previous years we have been unable to cover accommodation costs to do so and have travelled home early. On my final day of competing, which we would usually have not been there for, I was awarded top Junior for the 50m Freestyle!
